Equity Isn't a Theory, It's a Practice.

Every student is a capable mathematician. My work focuses on expanding access to high-quality math instruction through research-based, culturally responsive practices that honor student identity, thinking, and brilliance.

Hello!

My name is Nicky. I have been in the crazy (and extraordinary!) field of public education for 15 years. I have served as an instructional coach, math specialist, trainer, teacher mentor and curriculum writer. I am so excited to meet you and explore how we can make math equity and access a reality for every young person!

Areas of Specialization

Digital and In-Person Presentations

I feel so at home in front of a crowd! (Especially when the crowd is discussing equity and access in the area of mathematics!) I am an engaging and inspiring digital and in- person presenter. I have curated and presented numerous professional development sessions on a variety of math topics ranging from counting collections in the upper grades to those coaching teachers on how to develop skills of becoming a warm demander. I have offered these sessions at national conferences as well as for staff teams of teachers and district leaders.

Elementary Mathematics

I bring deep expertise in standards, progression documents, and vertical alignment across grade levels. I have worked extensively with a wide range of curricula and edtech tools—including Illustrative Mathematics, Bridges, Go Math, Ready Math, i-Ready, Imagine Learning, CGI, Singapore Math, IXL, and DreamBox—giving me a broad and flexible foundation to support diverse learners and instructional contexts. I support educators in creating math environments that honor student thinking, surface strengths, and foster positive math identity. From strategic student positioning to school-wide culture-building, I bring an expansive toolbox for designing classrooms where math is meaningful, joyful, and accessible to all.

Teacher Mentoring

I hold a certificate in Adult Learning and Cognitive Learning Theory from San Diego State University, where I am also a certified guide teacher. I’ve hosted numerous teacher candidates, mentored both new and experienced educators, and served as a grade-level lead and math content specialist. I curated a digital video library for teacher support and training. I have also created engaging and high-quality curriculum for core instruction, intervention, and support.

High Quality Coaching for Equity

I’ve spent many years working alongside teachers, administrators, and district level leaders to refine instructional practice, challenge bias, and center students as capable agents in their own learning. This is more than a job—it’s my life’s work. I’ve completed multiple Coaching for Equity training series with Elena Aguilar and stay deeply engaged with current, research-based best practices. The classrooms and educators I’ve supported have seen remarkable, data-backed growth as a result of this work.
